History of The Rex Hotel Saigon

History of The Rex Hotel Saigon

The Rex Hotel Saigon was originally built by the French in 1927 and was the Bainier Auto Hall. In 1959, it was renovated into the 6-floor Rex Complex Hotel then leased to the American Cultural Center in 1960.

During the Vietnam War (1955-1975), the American Information Service made its base at the hotel. It soon became the favorite haunt of US officers and the scene of daily press briefings to foreign correspondents. They called it the ‘five o’clock follies’. This became the popular name of the Rooftop Garden Bar.

In 1973, the building was renamed the Rex Trading Center and became famous throughout South East Asia. Afterward, there were plans to turn it into an illustrious hotel but none succeeded until after the war ended.

After 1975, the Rex became Ben Thanh — an international hotel owned by Saigon Tourist Bureau. However, the name was reverted in 1986. The Rex Hotel Saigon was one of the first state-owned 5-star hotels in Vietnam.

The pillow menu and bedside control panel are nice modern touches but sockets are not so plentiful. In-room tea and coffee are complimentary, but more than two bottles are on charge.
